The Mt. Kailash Kora path starts on the western edge of Darchen. When leave the village behind and head westward across the Batkha Plain, you may not be able to see Mt. Kailash at first but still can view some other high mountains like Guria Mandata , Api in Nepal and Kamet in India. About 4km from Darchen, the trail climbs up to reach a cairn at 4790m which is bedecked with pray flags and marks the first view of Mt. Kailash southern face and also the first of the four prostration points. Very quickly the trail enters the barren Lha-chu Valley which is so open here that you can see ahead the tall Tarboche Flagpole (4750m) in distance, one of the most significant sites for Saga Dawa Festival in Tibet. To west of Tarboche is the "two-legged" Chorten Kangnyi. For pilgrims, it is an auspicious act to walk through the small chorten's archway. After a short climb to east, it comes to the sky burial site of the 84 mahasiddhas (Tantric practitioners). The first of the Three Buddha footprints is also here but can be hardly seen. You'll have superb view of the valley from here. The valley narrows dramatically at a place called Sershong and now you can get clear shots of Mt. Kailash. Chuku Monastery is perched high above the valley floor on the hillside to west. It 'hides' so secretively into the rocks that you may not be able to notice it. From Chuku Monastery to Diraphuk Monastery, it is about 3hrs trek. Please take your time for this stretch as it offers some of the best scenery of the entire Kora. On the way, you'll find the second prostration point and the second Buddha footprint as well as the carving of God Tamdrin. Diraphuk Monastery (Lhalung Dira 5080m) lies at a great location which directly faces the astonishing northern face of Mt. Kailash.

No doubt when you wake up in the morning and step outside, you'll want to revel in the glory of your surroundings. After cross the bridge over Lha-chu and climb on to a moraine, you'll get on the trail with long ascent up Dolma-chu Valley to Drolma-la Pass. Today you'll have the hardest part of the whole Kora. Less than an hour along is the meadow at Jarok Donkhang (5210m) and the trail braches off to the southeast leading over the snow-capped Khando Sanglam-la, Polung Glacier and Polung Valley. Only a short distance above Jarok Donkhang is the rocky expanse of Shiva-stal (5330m). Pilgrims are supposed to undergo a symbolic death here and get reborn until reach the top of Drolma-la. It is customary to leave something behind at Shiva-stal, such as an item of clothes, a drope of blood or a lock of hair to represent the act of leaving this life behind. After Shiva-stal, the trail mercifully flattens for a while and proceeds along a glacial ridge. There are some interesting sights ahead including the sin-testing stone of Bardo Tang. About 30mins from Shiva-stal, the trail turns eastward for the final ascent. After the 200m climb, you'll reach the top of Drolma-la where most pilgrims and trekkers rest for refreshment if weather permits before start the steep descent. Almost immediately on the descent, you'll see the lake of compassion - Gauri Kund (5608m). It takes about one hours to complete the long and steep 400m descent to the grassy banks of Lham-chu Khir. At the valley, you may find nomad tents and a teahouse selling drinks and noodles. The third Buddha footprint is on the top of a hug rock nearby. After 30mins south, you'll get to an open place which provides the only glimpse of Mt. Kailash's eastern crystal face. Here you'll also find the third prostration point. Soon you'll see Zutulphuk Monastery (4820m).
