Tips for Tibet Trip Planning

When is the best time to travel Tibet?

Generally speaking, the best time falls from April to November. But for the valleys at lower altitude (such as Lhasa, Shigatse and Tsedang, etc.), you can travel at any time in the year and the Mt. Everest Base Camp tour is also available all year round.

Is it good to travel Tibet in winter?

In places at lower altitude such as Lhasa, Shigatse and Tsedang, the scenery does not change much from summer to winter. For the Mt. Everest, you will have a greater chance to view the snow-capped mountain clearly in winter, shining under the pure blue sky. Furthermore winter is a low travel season in Tibet, it is not very crowded and the cost for accommodation and transportation is cheaper so travelling Tibet in winter is a wise plan if not going to remote areas.

Must I travel to Tibet with a travel agency?

According to the local tourist law, you shall travel in Tibet in an organized group (a private group of your own or a join-in group), allowing no individual travelling for the moment.

How to choose a travel agency for my trip to Tibet?

Local travel agencies shall be your priority. We often receive inquiries for price information from travel agencies in other cities outside Tibet. A local travel agency can provide you the same travel service at a lower price.

What should I consider when working with a travel agency?

When book a tour with a travel agency, you shall sign a contract to confirm your tour schedule, tour cost and the terms. Please be aware of some travel agencies which offer a very low price and arrange the tour guide to lead the group to various government shops which are usually overpriced. Such shopping arrangements sometimes will just ruin your trip so always check it with the travel agency.

Which attractions are best for travelling in Tibet?

In Lhasa, the must-see attractions include Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple and the Barkhor Street. If the time permits, you shall try to include the three great Gelugpa monasteries – Drepung, Sera and Ganden as well. Shigatse is the second largest city in Tibet and usually included in a tour less than 7 days for exploration in middle Tibet area. When the length of the tour is 7 to 10 days, you shall not miss the life-long experience with the highest mountain in the world – Mt. Everest. The heaven lake of Namtso Lake, the sacred mountain and holy lake of Mt. Kailash and Lake Manasarovar in Ngari (Ali) are also worth of visiting when there is more time.
